I just finished reading the Snow Queen series for the second time and love it more now than before! I came here to try and read the extras but it says the page no longer exists when I click on the link. Have The Snow Queen extras been taken down? 😥

I have loved your books and can’t wait for your new ones! I also appreciate your freebies. I had a question about the Throne of the Snow Queen and something that was mentioned in the Heart of Ice. It said that Steiner tripled Rakel’s guard when he ascended to the throne and wondered what was his reasoning since he said he was only a little concerned about how she would react if he brought her home.

Hi Kimberly, you are right! You cited the start of the answer in your question–when Steinar says he was only “partially” afraid she wouldn’t react well after the horrible treatment she had received.

But that’s just one ingredient. For the whole answer, you have to dig into his character. While it’s true he did want to bring her home, he felt a lot of guilt that he had inherited the throne instead of her. (Hence his avoidance game for the first third of Sacrifice, and why he tries to give her the throne early on.)

Next, it needs to be said that Steinar–like every other citizen–was scared of magic for a long time. In fact out of those closest to Rakel, Steinar is the slowest to accept magic. He comes to embrace it–but in the beginning it is mostly out of love for his sister. (Sadly I couldn’t really show that journey as it mostly takes place while Rakel is off gallivanting around, looking for the mirror and freeing other cities.)

Stick all of that on the shoulders of a frightened teenage boy (Remember, Steinar was 19 at the time of Heart of Ice, but he had been king for a while already) there’s the real answer. Even though at that point Steinar was already had plans to bring Rakel home, he was still frightened–not so much of her, but more in that what others might do to obtain Rakel and use her against him. (If you recall, it’s a strategy Farrin considers before meeting her.) Since Steinar wasn’t exactly on speaking terms with her–and his advisers and court would have FREAKED if he had been–tripling her guard was just about the only thing he could think of to keep others from using her.

WOW. I’m sorry, that was a really long answer, but I felt like you needed to see his emotional baggage to understand his main fear at the time. 😉 I hope that helps!

Hi! So I just started reading sacrifice and it is wicked good, im dying with how well you captured the imagery of the characters and scenes. I was wondering about any particular songs to play while reading though? Do you have any music that you feel fits this novel?

Oohh, good question! When writing I can only listen to music that doesn’t have words, or I start writing to the beat. Usually I listen to movie soundtracks, game soundtracks, and stuff like that. I loved the two book format! It brought out more of the story and made it more interesting! I LOVE GRAYDEN!!!!!!!! He is definitely my favorite character in this series!!!!!! And I can’t wait to read all of your short stories! I gave a 5 star review just now. 😉

Good, I’m glad to hear you like the two-book thing. As I mentioned in the post, it makes it easier to dig into the characters, but it also lets me have more prominent secondary characters because I’ll have that many more pages to let them appear in. Also I’m SOOOO glad you liked Farrin. He was a labor of love, let me tell you! I’m always antsy about romance, so when he would go into it guns blazing I would freak out and run away from the computer, hahah. 😉 Anyway, thanks for reading! Loved the short! Sacrifice was definitely the best Timeless Fairy Tale story yet! I confess I nearly cried -twice. I loved Rakel, Farrin, and Kai. Just the best! On another note, waiting for the next King Arthur will surely kill me….Please keep writing!

I’m glad you thought so! I’m learning a lot from my editors so I feel like every book is improving, but different characters strike different reactions in people so it can be hard to judge how a book is received. And don’t worry–I WILL finish the King Arthur series this year, and it will be an epic ending. Muwahahah!

First Extra Unlocked!

I’m so happy to say that the reaction to Sacrifice has been overwhelmingly positive! That creates a huge sense of relief in me–I love writing stories, but in particular I love writing stories that enchant or entertain. I want to create stories that people enjoy, so release day is always a strange mixture of joy and apprehension for me, because that’s when I find out if I succeeded or not.

Thank you, Champions, for your patience in waiting for Sacrifice! The Snow Queen series was a bit of an experiment because it’s the first fairy tale to span more than one book. I really enjoyed having the extra book to bring in new characters and to dig deeper into old favorites–like Phile and Oskar. What did you guys think of the two-book fairy tale? Did you like it more or less? Was it about the same? Rakel faces a heck of a lot more oppression than say Cinderella or Elle, so I feel like this two-book system wouldn’t work for many of my fairy tales–like the upcoming Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty–but I have other stories in mind for similar treatment, so I am curious to hear what you think about it.

Observations aside, you Champions have unlocked the first Snow Queen short: Throne of the Snow Queen–which takes place the summer after Rakel first wakes up. I hope you enjoy it!
