Reign of Magic has had a smashing release, the launch fun is all over, so naturally you Champions are wondering what I’m writing next. Unfortunately, at this point my answer is “I don’t know.” And I’ve decided I’m not going to start on my next book until January.
Part of this is because I am throwing another Christmas event this year–which takes time to prepare–and I have another event I’m planning for in January that I need to work ahead on as well. But some of it is just that I’m really, really tired, and my physical and emotional health took a real beating during Reign of Magic, so before I write any more Enchantress books I really need to recover.
As I hinted at the top, I also don’t have any plans for next year–which is a real rarity for me. I will write Trial of Magic–the Fairy Tale Enchantress #4–but I have no idea when it will release at this point as I don’t intend to start on it for a while. This obviously is going to push back the series as a whole because my hope of finishing it in 2020 is no longer possible. I know the rest of the Fairy Tale Enchantress series is going to take longer to write, and I really don’t like the idea of leaving Second Age of Retha fans out for so long. But that series is almost as complicated as Angelique’s series, and at this point I mentally can’t handle that, so I also don’t know when the next Retha book will come.
Once I stop feeling like an anxiety-ridden squirrel whose tail got run over by a truck, I will try to create a plan for next year. And in the meantime I’ve been prepping for Christmas, I may have written another Retha short story, and I’ve got a few surprises up my sleeve for 2020.
Thank you so much for your patience and support, Champions. All of you are so incredible, and I love our community so much! I’ll get through this, and in the meantime we’ll have some fun! Thanks for reading, and have a lovely week!

Awwwww. I completely understand. I really, truly, deeply do. In fact, I’m incredibly proud of you for deciding to take a break. Too many people just work, and work, and work… never realising – or not wanting to realise – that they really need to look after themselves until they are too much of a mess to salvage. I, sadly, am often counted among them. Just rest, do whatever you need to do, don’t feel guilty if you feel too tired to do something – just REST. As everyone else as said, we’re not going anywhere. We’re here for you, dear Kitty! <3
And Kitty (just to echo everyone else), take all the time you need. I know you really struggled with RoM (which seems ironic to me, because I think it’s the best of the 3), but it turned out beautifully! Please rest, relax, catch up on some Star Wars or Netflix, play some games with friends, eat some yummy holiday food. Take the time to heal.
I know the anxiety-ridden-squirrel feeling all too well. It’s not a fun state to be in (and from experience, I can say it’s not a good state to write in, either). If there’s anything we can do; if you need someone to distract you or give you something else to think about (I know that helps me – your books are how I survived my MCAT & honors thesis), please just let us know. I have been continually impressed with your ability to pump out more than one novel a year; this year must have been insane, releasing so many large books. You take your time. Let your imagination be free to tell whatever random story it wants to, or none at all. We will be here, and we are happy to wait!

Just one more person chiming in that you take the time you need to recover! We were just looking at my husband’s schedule last night to find a way to use his PTO to get him a break, because he’s running on a wire edge with everything. Authors have a job just as much as anyone else, and they need time off to recover just as much, too! Do what you need, we’ll be here when you’re ready to go again :-).
You absolutely deserve and need the rest! Please take as much time as you need to to recoup, relax, rejuvenate, and refresh yourself! Your an awesomely prolific author, and with all the wonderful novels you’ve released, this break is more than well-deserved!
If I might be so bold, it’s a great opportunity to catch up on some great reading! 😀
But, of course, you should definitely relax in whatever way makes you feel the comfiest and do whatever you need to to take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health. Your fans will still be here no matter what, and we all understand and are happy that you’re taking some time to take care of yourself!
As always, thank you so much for all the wonderful writing you’ve put into the world. I know I speak for more than just myself when I say that your stories are truly life-changing—I’ve had some really rough moments and dark spots in my life, and many of your novels (like the King Arthur and Her Knights series, as I mentioned before on fb) have been an anchor for me. So, as someone who’s had her mental and emotional health saved by your stories, I’d really love you to prioritize your health as well.
Thank you again. I hope you get the chance to enjoy the fall and winter with lots of good movies and great books! <3
Yes, yes, yes! Second everything you said!
Take your time! We all know how it is! Let your mind recover and maybe have a binge watching weekend. I don’t blame you, if I went deeper down into the series I might be confused too. So, spend time with your family and stay healthy!
I’m only an artist, not a writer, but I truly empathize with what you said about burning out. Please take as long as you need to recover and find your sense of balance again! I know that sometimes when I’m so utterly sick of drawing I definitely need to delve into some other aspects of my life (for me, like reading your books :P). Everyone knows the best things in life are worth waiting for, anyway. I’m also glad to hear that Perfect Dog is feeling better too!

It hurts my heart to hear of the expenses you have experinced on behalf of your fans. Please, take all the time off you need. I would rather have a story you feel proud of that took a year, (or longer) than one you rushed to finish for your fans and felt was lacking.
The only thing I ask is that we get to experience that sweet moment between Angel and Evarist in your next Enchantress book. (No matter how long it takes for you to write.) I think I just might expire if we don’t get a bit of lip action. Especially after all that Evarist has been through; I really hope he doesn’t have to wait much longer either.
Rest well, and know your fans are behind you all the way. We are not going anywhere. One of my favorite authors had a stroke after releasing his 4th book. It took him almost 4 years to finish his last book. His fans were happy to wait patiently, just as yours are excited to follow you through your journey! Keep being amazing!
Best of wishes.

Hi Kitty. Love coming to you from Australia, where it is just now beginning to get hot though the cold (and colds) are lingering in my little part of it! Intrigued by the thought of a Retha short, I’ve loved all the shorts you’re written. They add such fun glimpses into the characters, especially when they interact with other story characters. Based on the online lotr group (which I would join if I was anything other than hopeless at computer games 🙂 ) I’m guessing that you are a huge lotr fan (like me). If you are in need of an hour or two of incredible fun have a look at this (Should be available on Amazon music) https://www.last.fm/music/martin+pearson/The+Unfinished+Spelling+Errors+Of+Bolkien
I take this on all long driving trips, time flies! It’s such fun I think you’ll enjoy it! My motto is live life with music, love and laughter (this fits all three). Take care and have fun along the way! Cheers Raelene
I totally agree with everyone on here. While we love your work, we love YOU more and know that your health and state of well-being are far more important than our entertainment. We will all be here when you’re ready 😊
Thanks for keeping us informed Kitty!!! Take a rest, you deserve it. Besides, it’s better to wait a year or two for the rest of the story, than be left forever wondering what happened because the author died of stress.
You are an awesome writer, but even writer’s deserve a vacation to! Enjoy the holidays!
Your health is more important than my craving a new book from your fertile imagination! Please take care of yourself!!! I’d much rather wait for your books knowing your happy and healthy.

As a fellow writer, I can say that writing is super hard work and I am always amazed at how many books you put out a year, Kitty! You definitely deserve a vacation for as long as you need it. You have to put so much of yourself into it, and it takes sssooo much longer to write a story than to read it. All us Champions really appreciate everything you do. As a fan of both the Retha and Enchantress series (and MBRC and Elves of Lessa, and all the rest!), I am just happy to know that you are planning to finish them sometime. I would far rather wait for a book that you are happy with than have it done at a certain time. I know they are going to be that much better for the extra time you take to care for yourself. Thanks for taking such good care of us champions. Feel better soon! I’ll be praying for you!
You take the time off and enjoy it. Totally relax and recharge those creative batteries.
I would much rather a favourite HEALTHY author
Much love Justine
From one of your older readers. I truly appreciate that you put your all into your books, especially this last one, “Reign of Magic”. They are all so well put together, and each and every one touches my heart in the best of ways. Thank you so much. And just know, it’s OK with me for you to take as long as you need as you go through your time of renewal. I know it’ll be well worth it! <3

We’ll just have to re-read all of your stories as we wait for the next installments. I so appreciate your clean stories and get lost every time I enter one. Enjoy your holidays and like I tell my husband when work gets to him – your home now, let it go! Let it go, don’t even think about it until after the holidays are over, then come back fresh and ready again! We love you too. Kim
Awww, thanks Kim! <3 I appreciate the advice and support!
Take your time, aaaannd relax, we all have the winter blues.
That’s me right now. But as in an earlier comment we have plenty of reading material from you so we can re-read like every book from your wonderful writing talents.
Plus if it’s possible (and you haven’t already done so ) could you do a character profiles so it’s easier to create fan art?? I’ve like got loads of stuff highlighted in you books but a quick and easy link would be perfect.
🙂 We actually have a Timeless Fairy Tale encyclopedia that will eventually be released–the team has just had some tough personal life stuff so we haven’t been able to get as far with it as we would like by this point.
But thank you! Hopefully relaxing will help! 😉

If you are taking votes…Life Reader might be a fun book to follow up? I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Ahahah then I’d have to edit the first one though–Editor #1 hasn’t ever taken a crack at it either…yikes!
But one day I will get to it! 😉
I am def waiting for that!
My daughter and I enjoy your books so much. I am currently re-reading both series side by side. I am remembering so much more! Please take the time to get well. It’s amazing and wonderful how you’ve intertwined the tails and so far in advance. Have a good day and on purpose.
🙂 Thanks, Amy! Your well wishes mean a lot to me!
Take your time to recover, we are grateful for you and want you to be healthy! Good things come to those who wait. 😉 Also, as a fan of the Fairy Tale Enchantress and the Retha series, it’s not like waiting will prohibit me from preordering them whenever you get to it. I am definitely in this for the long haul. 😂😂
<3 <3 <3 Thanks Chelsea! I badly needed to hear that this morning!
No problem! We are all friends here, and friends don’t tie friends to computers to write books when they are burned out. 😂 Also, don’t worry that taking a break will make us not want to read your future books. You’re in need of a break, so take your author sabbatical free of shame!
This might not be the most appropriate thing to say here but I have found 1000-3000 mg of vitamin c’s and a daily vitamin D3 to truly take the edge off winter illness and crumminess. Still get sick but it’s doesn’t reach level 8 awfulness. Sending healthy thoughts!
Funny you say that–my mom was also on me to take more vitamin C recently! 😉 Great minds think alike!
Heh MY mom swears by vitamin c, and I’m still suspicious about it being a panacea, but I cannot deny I haven’t had a full blown cold since I started 3 months ago. And I’ve had 3-4 colds in that time period. Plus my doctor said vitamin c’s ability to reduce & shorten colds is well documented… but it has to be 1000s of mg daily… but then I feel the amount of water I have to drink to feel normal also helps shorten my colds…? Ya I should just do it cuz my mom says so! 😊
Taking 1000 mg of vitamin C a day is good for you. But if you have a cold, then your body can take 1000 mg of vitamin C an hour! Zinc lozenges help, too.
Jocelyn Malone says
Also those “sunlight lamps” help my people who struggle in the winter over her (and we live in the Pacific Northwest, so real sunlight is hard to come by this time of year!) Vitamins + sunlamp really can help!
Yes! Vitamin D in particular is very important! I believe the Recommended Daily Allowance (in the US) is now 20ug (although I’d have to check my notes from nutrition class). Anyway, according to my doetetics teacher, it’s almost impossible for someone with white skin above the 40th parallel in winter to get enough Vitamin D, & it’s known to have a huge effect on mood & mental health, as well as bone health
So I think the solution for you, Kitty, is a vacation to Hawaii where I live. We even have a guest room. 😉😂☀️ Kidding, not kidding lol.
