The perilous gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope. It is loosely based on the Tam Linn legend and set in the waning days of Queen Mary’s reign in England and the start of Elizabeth I ‘s reign

The characters are well done The heroine is one of my all time best loved. While she fits the current model of the spunky empowered young girl who does not wait for Prince Charming but saves herself (and others) there is a core of strength and quiet power that the author developed in her young character that is transcendent of time and historical period and a book written a long time ago

I very much enjoyed the writers command of prose and her take on an old legend
It is only available in print and not in most book stores It is available at Amazon
I have gone through several copies. They disappear with younger female relatives
I only wish that Elizabeth Marie Poe had written more than two books

Thank you

Not terribly enjoyable but full of hugely important questions: crime and punishment, the idiot, and brothers karamazov. And villette by bronte. Tragic version of jane eyre.

Ahhh that’s true, sometimes the classic stuff isn’t incredibly enjoyable, but it’s a great thing for the mind to chew on! (I see a lot of classic poetry that way too–in particular Lord Tennyson or whatever his name was.)

My favourite classics are Persuasion by Jane Austin (I know technically some of her other works are better, but it was the first Austin book I read so I have always had a soft spot for it) and The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

DADDY LONG LEGS!!!! Too few people know about that story and it’s sequel! It’s SUCH a good story!!

BTW, I just read Robyn Hood: A Girl’s Tale and absolutely loved it!! Marian is a hoot and Much….I liked him so much, that I don’t have the words to describe my thoughts.

Yeeeeeeeees!! I agree so much about Daddy Long Legs. I have tried converting my friends into fans for AGES! (It wasn’t until I came up with the Anne of Green Gables comparison that I finally got them to pick it up.)

And I’m glad you liked Robyn Hood! (I am also overly fond of Marian and Much. They’re both so fun!)

Lol now I realize those might not count as classics. I also like anything by Jane Austen, Les Miserables, Huckleberry Finn, and Poldark–although I’m not sure if that’s reached the level of classic yet.

The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird are two of my favorites.

Nah, Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird absolutely count! (I did all old books in the video because they were all public domain. There’s a ton of more modern classics–like To Kill A Mockingbird–that I love as well!)
But I also agree with your second comment–particularly Huckleberry Finn. I love Mark Twain!

I forgot about Little Lord Fauntleroy–I loved that story as a kid! I have not heard of Ballet Shoes, though, so I will look that one up.

I really like Frankenstein, if hat counts as a classic.

Yes, Frankenstein is wonderful! I read it for English class last year and fell in love with it. I love arguing about who the real monster of the book is.

Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol are two that I really enjoyed in addition to the Jane Austen books, A Little Princess and the Count of Monte Cristo that you already recommended.

Yay for a fellow Little Princess fan! (And obvious cheers for Jane Austen and the Count as well, but Little Princess, woohoo!!)

I was always a Tales from the Arabian Nights kinda girl, the Little Hunchback being my favorite of those tales. I am ADHD, so I find reading things such as Jane Austin quite stressful, because I have to concentrate really hard to understand it. Pipi Longstocking was my absolute favorite as a kid, but I loved The Secret Garden too. One of the first novels I ever read by myself was called Help I’m a Prisoner in the Library by Eth Clifford. Not exactly a classic, and it was rather bizarre, but good read for elementary school kids all the same.

Ahhh yeah, Jane Austen does write longer books, so I do hear you. (I also love Arabian Nights!) And I’ve actually read “Help I’m a prisoner in the Library,” and I loved it!

Question, does it come out Friday, or the 20th? The 20th is a Saturday. I don’t mean to nark, just want to get my schedule straight.

Kitty

Woops! I meant Friday–the 19th. (The 20th was my original backup date.)
