I’ve been reading Patricia Briggs for years, although I actually like her epic fantasy series more. Masques started it all for me when I was 10, and they are so fun! I was thrilled when she came out with a sequel even if it was 20 years later. The other books in that world are great, as well.

My first forays into urban fantasy – HoBM and Death Before Dragons by Lindsay Buroker – both kicking off this year, and both terrific reads. Don’t see how anything will top those. Congratulations, Kitty!

I love The Innkeeper Chronicles. It’s a great series and I love how the authors (husband wife duo) will post unedited chapters on their blog almost every Friday while writing them. Right now the series is three books long with a side novel starring a side character and a small holiday novella. The authors do a really great job at detailing the different alien races as well as their different cultures.

I haven’t read Minimum Wage Magic, but I loved the Heartstriker series by Rachel Aaron!

I’ve read
Hall of Blood & Mercy -(and it’s just awesome, naturally)

The Guild Codex by Annette Marie-(I am caught up in this series and really enjoying it- Even though it doesn’t seem like it in the beginning as boy crazy as the lead is, it’s been not too spicy heat/romance wise. I’ve been told the author writes fade to black if there is anything but I haven’t read anything beyond a kiss so far in that series There are curse words, so if you don’t like that then keep it in mind.

The Innkeeper by Illona Andrews- I love this author duo and enjoy all of their series. This particular one is less steamy and less intense than some of their other books and a good place to get a feel for their style. It’s like a PG-13 in content.

Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs- I started this series but only read two. For some reason, the lack of engaging, interesting and strong female side characters took down my enjoyment a touch. I stalled out and will probably pick it up again. There was also a love square brewing by the end of the second book of which I’m not particularly a fan. I can’t remember language or chasteness. Basically, the writer is good and writes a standard formula with a strong female lead though without any other interesting females. This is a very popular author.

City Between by W. R. Gingell- I am enjoying this one though it took some time to get into the story because it’s a little different. Once I did I was completely hooked!

Heartstrikers by Rachel Aaron- A different series by this author than the one mentioned. I didn’t read the last couple but it was clean and I liked the leads. I got pulled out of this series because of timing and length of books at the time. I plan to finish.

Not on this list but I’ve also enjoyed some of Lindsay Buroker’s books. I am currently reading Death Before Dragons which has a funny sassy heroine, a Tiger like side kick from another realm and an arrogant dragon in it. It’s been clean as far as I remember. I think people who enjoyed Hall of Blood and Mercy might also enjoy it.

I know I’ve read other good ones but those are my two cents

Thanks Kitty and I hope your announcement is writing more in this world!! Finger’s crossed!

Yes, same for me on City Between. I picked up the first one, didn’t love it, put it down, then I picked it back up later and read every book out obsessively. It’s also one of those rare series I reread…and then reread again. I just got the newest one since it came out today!

Fun Urban Fantasy Reads!

I’ve loved my foray into Urban Fantasy, and the Hall of Blood and Mercy series! I have one last blog post about the trilogy to post this week–it’s actually an announcement of sorts, but to keep you occupied until then, I have a big list of recommended urban fantasy reads for you!

A huge thank you to my Facebook Champions who helped put this list together! It’s a pretty wide list that includes books in Kindle Unlimited and books that you should be able to borrow from your local library, so there should be something for everyone!

Please note: I haven’t read all of these books, and they do vary a lot on language and level of romance heat, so make sure you check out the reviews so you don’t end up with something you’re not comfortable with!

My Top Picks:

City Between by W. R. Gingell: This isn’t going to come to as a surprise to many of you, but I ADORE this series! It has tricky fae, vain vampires, twisty worlds, witty dialogue, action, and more. It’s so, so good! If you haven’t picked it up yet, you need to. NOW!

Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs: This series is the classic, quintessential urban fantasy series! Mercy Thompson is smart, kick-butt, and is pals with some of the baddest werewolves in town. Check this out if you want a masterfully told, classic! (Warning, there is some strong language!)

1-800-Where-R-U by Meg Cabot: This series squeaks the line of urban fantasy–it’s technically more supernatural–but if you want a hilarious/ laugh out loud YA series with mystery and adventure, this series is for you. (For more of an UF flare you could check out Cabot’s “The Mediator,” But 1-800-Where-R-U is funnier. Just sayin’!)

Hall of Blood and Mercy by K. M. Shea: Vampires, wizards, and fae, oh my! This trilogy follows the scrappy wizard, Hazel Medeis, and her misadventures as she gets kicked out of her house and moves in with a pack of vampires. (And yes, I’m just cheeky enough to plug my own series, buwahah.)
