How short is short anyway? Because that is quite arbitrary.

The closest I can come is the goose girl…. but given that that one is in Entwined I doubt that it is right

It’s a pretty bizzarre story.

So here’s a hint to help you–I can’t do this one in timeless fairy tales because the heroine’s parents, specifically her dad, really top out the creep-o meter, and all the Timeless Fairy Tale countries have established–GOOD–monarchs.

I will confess – I just Googled fairy tales where there are creeps for fathers. (I know that is cheating but I was curious.) Two of them stood out to me. The Donkey Skin story that was mentioned previously certainly falls into the creepy category. Another one that I read about was also rather dark – The Girl without Hands. Both of stories are disturbing enough with extremely selfish and demented fathers. However, if anyone can make creepy work, Kitty can do it! I look forward to reading it.

It has to be donkeyskin. That is one creepy dad we have there.

I agree that it has to be donkey skin which was an early thought but I dismissed that one because the blurb stated that the parents were dead

That’s what I’m thinking too but I’m not sure how that would work if both of her parents die.

My first thought, too

Yay for short heroines!! I feel so represented haha. Just so everyone knows, short does not mean “less”, it means “concentrated.”

Also – stupid question, but I thought a wizard was the male equivalent of a witch? Or do I have that wrong?

Kitty

January 30, 2020 at 04:12 AM UTC

OH! I forgot! Horray for people of Concentrated height! 😉 (I hope you like her!)

I am a female minor who is almost 6 ft tall, so I love characters like Dylan and Rakel. But I also have a younger sister who is just above 5 ft, so short characters make me happy too.

I think it typically does in books, but I’ve been heavily influenced by video games where a wizard is usually gender neutral, so in this case it’s gender neutral.

(It actually didn’t occur to me that it’s typically a male title until I noticed some of the guesses, but it’s a biiiiiit late to realize that!)

I am so excited about this series! Although, I’ve no clue about the fairytale. I will not be surprised if I have never heard of it, nothing really rings a bell except for the Ugly Duckling that was meantioned earlier. Perhaps, a fairytale where the main character becomes a servant to someone or her name could be a clue, or vampire’s name? Drake .. dragon, something with dragons maybe. Glad, I’m not in the quiz show, and this is not a $64 million question

Kitty

You might have heard of it–a pretty famous author did a retelling of it years ago. (I think she’s famous anyway, but I could be wrong…)

RJ

Oh it’s definitely Donkey Skin since I’m assuming Robin McKinley is the maybe famous author and she has the Deerskin retelling.

I have no idea about the fairytale but I am so excited. Go kitty!

I am so excited for this book , I also think hazel resembles angelique quite a bit

Kitty

January 30, 2020 at 04:08 AM UTC

oohh that’s a good point! But I am happy to say Hazel wasn’t quite as stomped on as poor Angelique was/is! (She’s got her own “fun” problems though…)

Well, I thought Rapunzel earlier, but now I’m thinking with a name like Drake in the story it must be The Ugly Duckling. Whatever it is, I can’t wait to read it.

Kate

Well I know what I’m about to say is completely out of the question (theme if you may call it), but what kind of poll are we having this year? Are we even going to have one? Okay, I’m extremely early for this but I really can’t help the anticipation!

Kitty

I can confirm it isn’t Rapunzel. 😉 I have plans for that story! (Prince Mikk of Arcainia, I’m looking at you!)

Cannot WAIT to see what you do with Rapunzel.

Hansel and Gretel made a brief appearance already in Puss in Boots.

Fairytale guess, now that we’ve been given a plot synopsis (yeah, my first guesses were totally off): Allerleirauh/The Coat of Many Furs?
You’ve already done The Goose Girl, albeit not in the Timeless Fairy Tales realm, but that’s another possibility. In both, a princess has to work as a servant in another kingdom because Betrayal and stuff.

Yeah, I’m gonna go with vampires, fae, and/or werewolves. Maybe this will be a more mature audience version of MBRC (without the books actually having explicit content of course)?

Kitty

January 30, 2020 at 04:06 AM UTC

Yep, that’s a pretty accurate description! I’d say it will be roughly the same maturity level as Snow Queen–so it’s got some darker parts/aspects to it–but it will still have lots of humor and be clean. There’s one character in particularly I’m hoping will dazzle you all…

I love your character conversations; they always make me smile. This one definitely makes me look forward to getting to know Hazel.

Kitty

I’m so glad to hear that! 😀 I love being able to show what the characters are like “off-script” so to speak!

😂 😝 😆 Short? Short? What’s wrong with short? She could be a little spit-fire!

Kitty

Hahah, she IS a sass! (Which is good, she needs to be to survive what she’s about to be inflicted with!)

Vampires quite probably. I still don’t know the Fairytale though. Excited to find out I wonder if it’s one of the ones I glanced through it doesn’t seem to fit.

Ding-ding on the vampires! They’re proving to be a lot of fun! Though that might be because I liked to poke fun at some of the typical tropes…

Magic Forged Cover Reveal

The Cover Reveal for Magic Forged is here!

As you can see, Magic Forged is book #1 in Hall of Blood and Mercy. Our intrepid heroine is named Hazel Medeis who is–as shown by the lightning in her hands–a wizard. As I’ve teased before, her story is based on a fairytale–you’ll find out what specific one in the next post!

Across Facebook and Discord, I’ve been releasing little bits of a description! In warning, it’s pretty bad–it usually takes me weeks to write these things, and I’m so incredibly BAD at them, so this isn’t the final product!

22-year-old Hazel is a wizard and heir to the magical House Medeis. Unfortunately, she has barely any magic at all, and has been bullied all her life as a result. When her parents die in a tragic car accident, Hazel is left to care for House Medeis and all the wizards sworn to it with only her flicker of magic…but it’s not enough.

Betrayed by a member of House Medeis who wants the House for himself, Hazel is forced to flee for her life. Allies abandon her, and everyone refuses to aid her, except Killian Drake…the most feared vampire in the region. But when Killian accepts her as a servant he isn’t doing so out of the kindness of his heart.

On the brink of a war with the fae, Killian believes Hazel could become a powerful weapon for the vampires. He never imagined she’d become so much more…

*** Now let’s have a bit of a conversation with the wizard herself so you Champions can get to know her better!

Kitty: Okay, Hazel. You are part of a top secret series so you cannot give too much away, but please say hello to all the wonderful Champions!

Hazel: Hi, everyone! Thanks for inviting me here, today. It was so nice to get out of Drake–

Kitty: No spoilers!!

Hazel: Sorry.

Kitty: Could you describe yourself for us?

Hazel: That’s kind of a hard question. Uh, I guess I’ll start with I don’t have much magic at all–which is pretty miserable because, go figure, wizards are snobs–and I’d like to think I’m smart.

Kitty: You are also quite short.

Hazel: Should I be concerned that you’re my author and you think that’s one of the most remarkable things about me?

Kitty: I thought I should mention it so people are aware just how badly you struck out on the DNA lottery. You don’t have your parents’ magic or their height, which means you are a prime target for a bully!

Hazel: Yeah…you are on my side, right?

Kitty: Always!

Hazel: Okay, good.

Kitty: Which is why I wish to promote personal and emotional growth for you!

Hazel: …I am really not liking the sound of that.

And we’ll end it there! In my next post I’ll reveal a little more about the series, as well as the fairytale Hazel’s story is based on! Do we have any last minute guesses what it could be? Or now that we have the series name, does anyone want to guess what other paranormal race–besides wizards–is prominently featured in this book?
